Authorities have been urged to enhance promotion of the new crossing arrangements at the upgraded Huanggang Port checkpoint between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, while ensuring adequate parking for buses at the site. This call comes from a lawmaker and a transport sector veteran following the government's tabling of the Huanggang Port Hong Kong Port Area Bill to the Legislative Council on July 15, 2026. The bill provides the legal framework for implementing a co-location arrangement at the border crossing.

Ben Chan Han-pan, chairman of the legislature’s transport panel, stated on July 16, 2026, that the bill is expected to be passed within the week due to additional meetings scheduled. He dismissed concerns about the bill being rushed, emphasizing that the Legislative Council has experience handling similar bills and that lawmakers will have sufficient time to raise questions and understand the legislation. “During past meetings, even though we had to act quickly, we were serious and raised questions to clarify,” Chan said in a radio interview.

Chan also explained that the upgraded facility will adopt a “joint inspection” model, allowing travelers to complete immigration procedures for both sides of the border in a single step. He acknowledged that residents might be uncertain about when they have crossed into mainland China and stressed the importance of clear explanations and promotion of the detailed arrangements in the future.

The call to improve promotion and bus parking facilities aims to ensure a smooth transition and better user experience at the Huanggang Port crossing.
