A Hongkonger has died in a traffic accident in New Zealand, marking at least the second fatal crash involving residents from the city this year.

The Chinese consulate in Queenstown announced on Thursday, July 16th, 2026, that a "serious traffic accident" occurred the previous day along Crown Range Road near the South Island city of Queenstown. The accident involved a collision between a car and a bus near Cardrona, a township known for its ski resort, at about 10:15 a.m.

“Our consulate is deeply saddened by the loss and has activated its emergency response mechanism immediately,” the consulate said. It extended its deepest condolences to the victim's family and pledged to provide consular assistance for their arrival in New Zealand to handle necessary arrangements.

The consulate did not disclose further details about the victim or the exact circumstances of the accident.

This incident marks the third fatality involving Hongkongers in New Zealand this year.
