Kyra Jonsun, 71, died after a fire engulfed her home in Coniston, Wollongong, at about 5:30 pm on Sunday, July 13th, 2026. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the blaze, but police have confirmed it is not being treated as suspicious. Her death marks the sixth fatality caused by structure fires across New South Wales this winter.

Jonsun was a revered surfboard designer and a passionate advocate for gender-diverse people. Born intersex and transitioning to a woman later in life, she is believed to have imported the first snowboard to Australia in the early 1970s. Surf historian Stu Nettle noted that Jonsun brought the Winterstick snowboard to Australia after a trip to America, saying, "There's lots of different threads of her life that come together and they all generally meet in surfing."

Her work included pioneering designs using flexible materials, different fin shapes, and creating kneeboards during a time when such innovations were at the forefront of wave riding. Much of her work was likely done at John Skipp's factory on the Princes Highway in Wollongong, where Skipp recalled leaving work at 5 pm and returning in the morning to find Jonsun still there, often coming in whenever he had a new idea.

Illawarra Shoalhaven Gender Alliance president Claire Murphy highlighted Jonsun's role as an advocate, stating she often spoke at pride gatherings and volunteered her time to various events. Jonsun was remembered as an astute and intelligent person who could have pursued many professions but chose to dedicate herself to surf photography and design.
