Will Grier, a former star quarterback for the West Virginia Mountaineers who played two NFL games, has retired from professional football at the age of 31. Grier made the announcement on his social media on Wednesday, July 16, 2026, and the Carolina Panthers issued a news release regarding his decision.

Grier was selected by the Panthers in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft after playing college football for both the Mountaineers and the Florida Gators. He signed a deal with the Panthers in April 2026 but reportedly declined a coaching opportunity with the Dallas Cowboys, opting to step away from the sport entirely.

Several NFL players, including Dak Prescott and Kenny Pickett, paid tribute to Grier on social media. Prescott commented, "Never retired, just switching lanes," in support of Grier's decision.

During his NFL career, Grier appeared in only two games, both with the Panthers during his rookie season. His retirement marks the end of his professional playing career as he moves on from football.
