Two families have filed a lawsuit against Unity Medical Center in Grafton, North Dakota, alleging that hospital staff mistakenly switched two baby boys at birth more than 36 years ago. Kyle Bylin and Jeremy Morrison were the only infants born at the hospital on January 26, 1988, according to the lawsuit cited by KVLY.

The plaintiffs claim the hospital sent each baby home with the other child’s biological parents, resulting in the two men being raised by each other’s families without anyone’s knowledge. The switch was reportedly discovered through DNA testing decades later.

Unity Medical Center, operated by Christian Unity Hospital Corporation, issued a statement to KKTV acknowledging the unusual situation and the profound impact on the men and their families. The hospital said it is working to better understand the case but noted that due to the passage of nearly four decades, relevant medical and staffing records no longer exist, and no members of the original delivery team remain employed there.

One of the men reflected on his experience, saying, "I didn't have anyone that looked like me in my family," and, "I was that blonde-haired kid that stood out in a family full of brown-haired people." He added, "I know I definitely wouldn't be here in Colorado today if I went home with the right parents," and "I would have been working the farm with my older brother that I never knew I had."

The lawsuit highlights the significant emotional and personal consequences of the alleged switch, which remained undiscovered for over three decades.
