About 90 percent of flat owners at the fire-damaged Wang Fuk Court in Hong Kong have returned signed letters accepting the government’s buy-back offer, according to the Deputy Financial Secretary’s Office. As of July 16, 2026, a total of 1,786 owners had submitted acceptance letters, with 769 of them (43 percent) having already signed sale and purchase agreements with the government.

By building block, 1,565 acceptance letters came from Blocks A to G, representing approximately 90.1 percent of flats in those buildings. Additionally, 221 letters were received from Wang Chi House (Block H), which was not damaged in the fire, accounting for roughly 89.1 percent of its flats.

The buy-back plan follows a devastating fire on November 26, 2025, which tore through Blocks A to G, killing 168 people and displacing about 5,000 residents. In February 2026, the government announced it would spend about HK$6.8 billion (US$867 million) to acquire affected flats, funded by HK$4 billion in public money and HK$2.8 billion from a donation-backed support fund. The offer was later extended to owners in Wang Chi House at an estimated additional cost of HK$1 billion.

Despite the high acceptance rate, some residents have raised concerns about rushed decisions related to priority selection in the buy-back process.
