On Saturday, July 18th, 2026, armed groups ambushed a Malian military convoy in a remote area of the Gao region in northern Mali. The Malian army announced it has launched a counterattack following the attack by fighters linked to the al-Qaeda affiliate Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) and the separatist Azawad Liberation Front (FLA).

Both JNIM and FLA claimed responsibility for the ambush, stating they inflicted "great human losses" and "serious material damage" on Malian forces. The Malian military has not disclosed specific details about its casualties but indicated that its partners, likely Russian paramilitaries or mercenaries, were also targeted.

According to the army chief, approximately 30 Malian soldiers were killed during the retaking of a key town in the region. Additionally, AFP reported that images released by the FLA purportedly showed dozens of army prisoners seized during the ambush. The rebels also released footage claiming to show Malian soldiers surrendering.

This incident occurs amid ongoing efforts to stabilize the volatile northern region, with Mali receiving weapons support from Russia and recently restoring diplomatic ties with Algeria after a yearlong rift.
