Simon 'Bucky' Baccanello tragically died in a shark attack in 2023 while surfing at Walkers Rocks off Elliston, South Australia. Three years later, the community continues to honor his memory through a new sporting complex dedicated to his legacy.

On Tuesday, a 35-strong team embarked on the gruelling 720-kilometre Bucky's Beach Relay from Adelaide to Elliston, a journey marked by strong community spirit and support. Children warmly welcomed the runners as they arrived in Elliston on Saturday morning.

Bucky's brother expressed that Simon would be pleased to see efforts benefiting the community he loved. "I'm sure Simon would be very happy with the fact that what we're doing is for the benefit of a community that he loved, and a community that we've come to love," he said. He emphasized that Simon wanted to be remembered for how he lived, rather than for his death.

Elliston Area School principal Chad Fleming, who has supported the relay team, said he was "blown away" by the camaraderie among participants. "You can just feel the vibes coming from everyone that's participating and everyone involved," Fleming said. He added that while plans for the new facility are not yet finalized, it will focus on community health, wellbeing, and fitness.

The community’s ongoing efforts reflect the deep affection and respect for Simon Baccanello, who was known for bringing people together and valuing friendships.
