The Liberty Justice Center, a conservative American law firm chaired by Sara Albrecht, took on former President Donald Trump’s extensive global tariffs, known as the "Section 122 tariffs," which Trump announced unexpectedly on April 2, 2025.

Albrecht, who had voted for Trump three times, was acutely aware of the risks involved, including possible retaliation from a Republican president known to take matters personally. "Finding plaintiffs was the hardest thing to do because President Trump has been known to take things very personally," she said.

The case escalated to the United States Supreme Court, where the ruling was met with disappointment. A spokesperson said, "The Supreme Court's ruling on tariffs is deeply disappointing, and I'm ashamed of certain members of the court, absolutely ashamed, for not having the courage to do what's right for our country."

Despite the challenges, the firm celebrated a significant victory when an Australian brand received a six-figure tariff refund, including 6 percent interest, just two months after lodging a claim.

Albrecht also noted the historical significance of the legal battle coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, signed by 56 men, many of whom were merchants and importers upset by British taxes. She said she especially enjoyed the "symmetry" of the ruling in this context.

"That afternoon, in the middle of an interview I was doing on BBC, he announced the Section 122 tariffs," Albrecht recalled, highlighting the suddenness of the tariffs' imposition.

The firm had been bracing for sweeping global tariffs but was still shocked when Trump implemented them, sending global markets and importers into turmoil.
