At least four people were killed and four others went missing after a flash flood swept through Muong Than village in the mountainous northern province of Lai Chau, Vietnam, early on Friday, following days of heavy rain, state media reported on Saturday, July 18, 2026.

The Vietnam News Agency reported that seven people were injured in the flood. Since Wednesday, landslides and flash floods caused by heavy rains have damaged roads, power grids, and hundreds of houses, and inundated 238 hectares of crops in the region, according to the government’s disaster management agency.

Vietnam is prone to deadly storms and floods during its rainy season, which peaks from July through September. Last year, natural disasters, mostly floods, resulted in 489 deaths nationwide.

Authorities have forecast heavy rain of up to 250mm in several parts of northern Vietnam on Saturday, warning of the risk of further flash floods and landslides.
