Roughly 48 hours before the 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain at MetLife Stadium, President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino praised the tournament as the greatest sporting event in history.

The United States hosted the majority of this year's tournament, with 11 of the 16 venues staging matches, including all quarterfinals, semifinals, and the upcoming final. Infantino stated, "And, by all means, this World Cup has exceeded all expectations," noting that 7 million fans have attended games so far and "billions" have watched on television.

Speaking at a FIFA reception at Trump Tower in New York City on July 17, 2026, Trump said, "When I told you we will do a great World Cup, you told me America will welcome the world." He added, "Everyone that came here enjoyed it, everyone that stayed home enjoyed it as well."

Trump also highlighted the significance of the event for the country, saying, "It's been a true honor for Americans to share our magnificent country with the world. And today, America, it's stronger and wealthier and hotter than ever before, and you're a big part of it..."

Infantino described the tournament as "not just the greatest World Cup of all time," but "the greatest human, social and cultural event that mankind has ever witnessed and seen. And we are all part of it."

Trump is scheduled to attend the final match between Spain and Argentina.
