President Donald Trump intensified his accusations of widespread voter fraud and foreign interference in the 2020 presidential election on Friday, focusing on alleged actions by China. In a primetime address to the nation on Thursday, Trump unveiled what he described as new proof compiled by his administration that the 2020 election, which he lost to former President Joe Biden, had been "stolen."

Following the speech, Trump posted on Truth Social claiming that the People’s Republic of China "carried out what is believed to be the largest compromise of election data in history," alleging Beijing illegally acquired 220 million U.S. voter files. He called this "an unprecedented election security nightmare" and stated that intelligence showed China assigned a data exploitation unit specifically for this project.

However, independent experts reviewing the trove of files released by the White House alongside Trump's speech found no major revelatory weaknesses in the U.S. election system. Additionally, White House documents suggest that China primarily used the acquired data to predict elections rather than to manipulate votes. Experts also noted that China's efforts to collect U.S. data have been known for years and that voter data can often be freely accessed online.

From the speech transcript, Trump said, "This evidence shows that the election system we have is dangerously exposed to hacking, exploitation, and foreign interference. Just as disturbingly, this vital information has for many years been covered up and hidden from you, the American People, and that changes right now."

Since winning a second term, Trump has directed his administration to investigate the 2020 election results. In 2023, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis indicted Trump and 18 others on racketeering charges, alleging they conspired to undermine the election outcome.
