The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is currently upgrading its screening equipment by installing computed tomography (CT) scanners at checkpoints in nearly 300 U.S. airports. These new scanners produce 3D images of carry-on bags, allowing TSA officers to rotate X-ray images for clearer inspection and use sophisticated algorithms to automatically flag suspicious items such as explosives or other threats.
Peter Duffy, a federal security director for the TSA, stated that the use of CT technology significantly enhances the agency's ability to detect threats at checkpoints. Travelers may also notice changes in screening protocols; passengers are not required to remove laptops, electronic devices, or liquids (following the 3-1-1 rule) when passing through lanes equipped with CT scanners, which the TSA says improves the travel experience.
However, some of the new CT scanners have smaller openings designed to house more powerful X-ray hardware. A TSA spokesperson told Nexstar that this design is necessary to accommodate advanced imaging technology and ensure optimal performance. TSA officers are available to assist travelers with larger items or special needs to facilitate a smooth screening process.
While the TSA has not disclosed the total amount allocated for these upgrades, announcements from 2022 and 2023 indicate that the Department of Homeland Security has spent well over a billion dollars on the CT scanner program so far. Travelers who are not careful with their carry-on bags may face challenges due to the smaller scanner openings.
