Two U.S. service members were killed in action, and one remains missing after Iranian attacks targeted two military bases in Jordan on Friday, July 17, 2026, according to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). The attacks involved ballistic missiles and drones, and U.S. forces, alongside partner forces, defended against the strikes.

Four American service members were medically evacuated to Jordanian hospitals but have since been discharged. Other personnel who sustained minor injuries were evaluated and have returned to duty, CENTCOM said in statements shared on social media.

Out of respect for the families, CENTCOM is withholding additional information, including the identities of the fallen, until 24 hours after next of kin have been notified.

The attacks come amid a series of tit-for-tat strikes between the U.S. and Iran over alleged breaches of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed last month, which had initiated a temporary ceasefire amid ongoing negotiations. Tehran has threatened a wider war if U.S. strikes continue.

An Iranian statement accused the U.S., referred to as the "Great Satan," of repeatedly breaching the agreement, calling the U.S. President's signature "utterly worthless and devoid of credibility." The statement warned that Iran and the Resistance Front have "unforgettable lessons in store" for the U.S. as the conflict escalates.

The current Iranian leader, who assumed power after joint U.S.-Israeli strikes in late February killed his predecessor, has not made public remarks since taking office.
