LONDON, July 19, 2026 – England defeated India by 27 runs in a high-scoring one-day international (ODI) match at Lord's, clinching the series 2-1 and marking their first bilateral ODI series win against the world’s top-ranked side since 2018.

Opener Ben Duckett was the standout performer, scoring a record-breaking 141 runs off 135 balls, which set the foundation for England's imposing total of 387-3 in 50 overs. Duckett's innings, featuring 18 fours and one six, became the highest individual ODI score at Lord’s, surpassing Viv Richards’s 138 not out from the 1979 World Cup final.

Duckett shared a 192-run opening partnership with Jacob Bethell, who contributed 91 runs, marking England’s highest opening stand against India in ODIs.

India’s response was bolstered by Rohit Sharma’s thrilling 138 from 110 balls, his 34th ODI century, and a 147-run opening stand with Shubman Gill, who scored 77. However, after Sharma was dismissed by Bethell’s slow left-arm spin, India gradually fell behind the required run rate.

Substitute Rehan Ahmed played a key role in the field, taking catches to dismiss Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer. Virat Kohli, India’s captain, was dismissed for 74 after miscued shot to England captain Harry Brook.

Reflecting on the victory, Duckett said, “Very precious. But all that I'm really bothered about today is that we've beaten the best side in the world. We've probably had a fair few critics over the last 12 to 18 months and a lot of that has been rightly so at times but now we can build on this. We've shown what we're capable of, we are just trying to be as consistent with it as possible moving forward.”

England’s bowler Sam Curran also made a significant impact, taking 4 wickets for 75 runs, helping to restrict India from chasing the large target.
