A top surgeon in Tasmania has warned that the potential sale of Hobart Private Hospital to Catholic healthcare provider Calvary Health Care could force the state "back into the dark ages" by limiting access to certain medical procedures.

Healthscope's receiver announced plans in December to sell Hobart Private following the company's financial collapse. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is expected to decide on the sale within weeks.

Dr. Nanda Kandamany, the only surgeon in Tasmania performing gender-affirming top surgery, relies on Hobart Private as it is the sole hospital supporting this procedure. He stated, "This is going to set things back 50 years or so."

Health Minister Bridget Archer emphasized her commitment to ensuring no reduction in services if Calvary takes over the hospital. However, she acknowledged the department is exploring options to maintain services, including private options within the public system, should alternative private providers not be found.

Labor health spokesperson Sarah Lovell welcomed the minister's assurance but questioned how the public system could absorb additional services amid budget cuts. She expressed concern over a $700,000 reduction in the health budget while the system faces increased demand due to the private sector's service changes.

Earlier this year, Healthscope announced plans to restructure into a not-for-profit entity operating 31 hospitals.
