In Gaza City, football fans are rallying behind Spain ahead of the World Cup final against Argentina on Sunday, July 19, 2026. Ahmed al-Bozm, a 33-year-old Palestinian, stated, “I’m completely behind Spain because they stood up for Palestine.” This sentiment is widely shared in the Gaza Strip, influenced by the Spanish government's position during the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine and public support from Spanish sports figures such as Barcelona star Lamine Yamal.

Al-Bozm sent a message of gratitude to Yamal, who in May publicly showed support by waving the Palestinian flag during Barcelona’s La Liga championship celebration parade. However, the ongoing conflict has severely impacted daily life in Gaza. Adnan al-Afifi, a former footballer and stadium manager, highlighted the difficulties faced by Palestinians, noting that electricity is only available sporadically due to fuel scarcity and high costs, which also affects the ability to watch matches.

To maintain a semblance of normalcy, Afifi has organized World Cup-themed exhibition matches at the Palestine Sports Club in Gaza City, the only football club still operational and accessible in the Strip.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez emphasized that Spain’s support aims to promote a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict and alleviate Gaza’s humanitarian crisis. He also called for a ceasefire and the delivery of humanitarian aid to the region.
