Senator Mark Warner (D-Va.) on Sunday, July 19th, 2026, criticized President Trump’s recent primetime speech, asserting that it demonstrates a lack of seriousness about securing elections. Warner pointed to the recent dismissal of the remaining Democratic members at the independent Elections Assistance Commission earlier this month as evidence of this stance.

“There was something called the Elections Assistance Commission. Nobody knows about it, but it works with local registrars, state registrars, making sure we vet voting machines,” Warner said during an appearance on ABC News’s “This Week.” He added that Trump had fired all senior leadership, including Republicans and Democrats, at the commission.

Warner expressed concern that the president is not seeking a secure election, stating, “if we have a free and fair election, he and his allies are gonna get beat historically this fall.”

During a separate appearance on CBS News’s “Face the Nation,” Warner said Trump’s Thursday address was "the opening shot of trying to undermine Americans’ confidence that their vote will be actually counted and mean something." He noted that Trump cast doubt on the outcomes of the 2018 and 2020 campaign races and raised fears about potential interference, including the possibility of bringing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to polling places or barring certain voting machines.

Warner also highlighted concerns over the president’s efforts to dismantle the Electronic Registration Information Center, a nonprofit, bipartisan data-sharing program that helps states cross-reference and clean voter registration lists to remove deceased individuals or those who have moved.
