For the second time in FIFA World Cup history, Spain has claimed the championship title. On Sunday night, July 19, 2026, at the New York/New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, Ferran Torres scored the game-winning goal in the 106th minute of extra time, leading Spain to a 1-0 victory over Argentina.

Torres, who came off the bench in the second half, pounced on a bouncing ball in the box and used his left foot to send the ball just under the crossbar past Argentina's goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez. Reflecting on the moment, Torres said, “It was a goal scored by 47 million people,” referring to Spain’s population.

This victory marks Spain’s second World Cup title, adding to their first win in 2010. Spain dominated the match, taking the first 20 shots on goal before Argentina managed their first attempt late in extra time. Argentina’s Enzo Fernandez was sent off in second-half stoppage time after receiving his second yellow card, forcing Argentina to finish the match with 10 players.

The win also denied Lionel Messi a second straight World Cup title in what he has indicated would be his final World Cup appearance. Despite Argentina’s efforts, including a late corner kick from Messi that led to a chance for reserve Giuliano Simeone, Spain maintained their lead.

Spain’s triumph ended a streak previously held by Italy, who went 37 matches unbeaten from October 2018 through September 2021 before Spain ended that run.
