Tunisia, home to approximately 12 million people, is experiencing a significant increase in summer heat waves. On Friday, July 18th, 2026, an exceptionally intense heat wave peaked, bringing temperatures close to 50 degrees Celsius and breaking historical records across multiple regions, local media reported on Saturday, July 19th.

The central governorate of Kairouan recorded a temperature of 49.7°C, surpassing its previous record of 49.2°C, according to Xinhua. Meanwhile, the northeastern governorate of Zaghouan reached 48.6°C, exceeding its prior high of 48°C.

The extreme heat has posed challenges for various professions, including blacksmiths and traditional bread bakers, who face compounded heat from their ovens and tools. Residents sought relief by hydrating, swimming, and visiting green areas to cool off.

The meteorological department confirmed that the heat wave peaked on Friday after delivering unusually high temperatures.
