On Sunday, July 19th, the United States carried out airstrikes targeting Iran in retaliation for the first US military fatalities since the Middle East conflict reignited. A US service member was killed on Saturday, July 18th, during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance in northern Iraq, according to a statement from US Central Command (CENTCOM). CENTCOM also reported that two service members were killed on Friday, July 17th, in Jordan while defending against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks, with another service member missing in action.

Iran swiftly responded by targeting two US bases in Kuwait with drones, striking an ammunition depot at Camp Udairi and Patriot radar and air surveillance systems at Ali Al Salem Air Base. Tehran additionally launched fresh strikes in Jordan. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) accused four ships of attempting to disrupt passage through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil transit route, stating two ships had accidents and were stopped, while the other two abandoned their journey.

Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, who assumed leadership after his father was killed in initial US-Israeli strikes, vowed to teach the Americans an "unforgettable lesson" in a statement broadcast on state TV.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised Lebanon for its "move towards peace" following a meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun in Washington. Israel's defense minister warned of a strong response to any Iranian attack after Israeli and Jordanian forces intercepted an Iranian missile launched toward the Jordanian city of Aqaba.

The conflict continues to escalate as a preliminary deal to end the war has collapsed, with both sides exchanging missile and airstrikes. Kuwait residents have reported increased demand for water and canned goods amid fears of disruptions to services and supply chains.
