The US military announced on Sunday, July 19th, 2026, that a service member was killed in Iraq the previous day during the controlled detonation of a downed Iranian drone. This announcement came as the US launched additional airstrikes against Iran in retaliation for the killing of American troops.

Earlier, the US military stated that its strikes targeted Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard to respond to the killing of troops in Jordan on Friday. One service member was reported missing after that attack, and the military later said that unidentified remains were found and are being examined.

The US Central Command said the strikes hit Iranian military coastal surveillance and air defense facilities, maritime capabilities, and missile and drone storage sites. The operation aimed to degrade Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz and swiftly punish the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which controls Iran’s ballistic missile arsenal.

Iranian authorities reported that at least 50 people were killed and 517 wounded in the latest US strikes. The International Atomic Energy Agency noted that the targeted site, still in the very early stages of construction, contained no nuclear material during its last inspection.

Meanwhile, Iran fired missiles toward Jordan, risking further escalation into neighboring Israel. The situation marks a significant deterioration in US-Iran relations, with both sides increasingly targeting civilian infrastructure and moving closer to all-out war following the collapse of last month’s interim peace deal.
