The WNBA has suspended Toronto Tempo coach Sandy Brondello for one game following an inappropriate comment made during a game against the Atlanta Dream on Friday, July 18th, 2026. The incident occurred during the Tempo's 111-92 loss when Brondello was heard referring to player Angel Reese as a "protected species" after a foul call on Tempo player Nyara Sabally, who was injured following contact with Reese.

Brondello issued an apology, stating, "Last night, in the emotion of the moment after Nyara's injury, I used a phrase that I shouldn't have used, and I take full responsibility for that. My frustration was with the officiating, but my words unfairly put the focus on you." She further expressed regret for the impact of her words, especially on Black women in the league, saying, "I regret that my words caused hurt to a community I respect so deeply. I've spent my career competing with, coaching and learning from incredible black women."

Angel Reese responded on social media with the message "ARE WE SURPRISED?!" tagging Brondello's account and adding a clown face emoji.

The WNBA emphasized the importance of professionalism and respect, stating, "The WNBA expects all coaches and team personnel to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and respect that are fundamental to our league." As a result of the suspension, Brondello will miss the Toronto Tempo's upcoming game against the Las Vegas Aces on Tuesday, July 21st, 2026.

Brondello has been a head coach in the WNBA since 2014, having won titles with Phoenix and New York.
