United Nations agencies have condemned a fresh Russian assault on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv on Sunday, July 19th, 2026, which resulted in at least one death and a dozen injuries. The large-scale overnight attack damaged homes, shops, and a metro station, according to Matthias Schmale, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine.

The attack followed a deadly strike the previous day in the Odesa region, where several people, including children, were killed or wounded at an amusement park. UN humanitarian affairs office OCHA reported that aid workers responded by providing meals, shelter materials, and psychological and legal support to those affected, noting that the attack "damaged homes and destroyed livelihoods."

UN Women highlighted the impact on women in Kyiv’s Lukianivska district, one of the hardest-hit areas, sharing images of people amid the wreckage of an outdoor market. The agency noted that women sellers there survived what Ukrainian authorities described as one of the largest and most intense Russian attacks on Kyiv and its region, with 41 missiles launched within just 40 minutes overnight.

Between January and May 2026, civilian casualties among women and girls increased by an estimated 34 percent compared with the same period in 2025, UN Women said, underscoring the war’s devastating impact on women and the urgent need for gender-responsive humanitarian assistance and recovery efforts.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that while all staff were safe and no medical supplies were stored at the targeted site, the facility was key to its operations. WHO added that such attacks complicate efforts to support health systems in Ukraine.

Matthias Schmale emphasized that civilians and civilian infrastructure are protected under international law and stressed that "civilians, their homes, and life-saving humanitarian assistance must never be a target."
