During a state visit to France on Monday, July 20, 2026, Gabonese President Brice Oligui Nguema and French President Emmanuel Macron signed three strategic agreements aimed at strengthening political and economic ties between the two nations.

Central to the discussions was the signing of an initial memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the Gabonese government and French mining group Eramet. The MOU outlines plans to process up to 700 kilotons of manganese ore annually in Gabon by the end of 2031. Libreville has set a deadline of January 2029 for all manganese ore to be processed before export.

President Oligui Nguema's office stated that the agreement will help "generate greater added value within the country, support its industrialisation and boost the competitiveness of the national economy."

The other agreements signed during the visit cover security as well as water and energy sectors. According to a statement, these accords mark a new phase in Franco-Gabonese cooperation, "focused on concrete results that are tangible for the people."

Further agreements, particularly concerning manganese, are expected as the visit continues.
