Spain's World Cup-winning team was greeted by an estimated two million fans during a lively championship parade through Madrid on Monday, July 20th, 2026. The 26 players and their coaching staff first met with the country's royals and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez after returning from New Jersey, where they defeated Argentina 1-0 in the final after extra time.
"Thank you to the coaches and players for the style of play, the effort and the victory," Sánchez said.
The squad then took an open-top bus emblazoned with "Stars shine together" and photos of the players on a route from near Moncloa Palace, the prime minister's official residence, to Cibeles Square. Authorities reported that around 120,000 people attended the ceremony at Cibeles. Players, carrying the World Cup trophy and wearing shirts with "Somos Campeones" (We Are Champions), danced and interacted with fans along the way.
"It's been an emotional and proud experience to represent a wonderful country with such passionate and devoted fans," Spain coach Luis de la Fuente said before the parade. He was later lifted into the air by his players during the celebrations.
Meanwhile, FIFA's disciplinary committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the FIFA disciplinary code related to a series of altercations that occurred after the final whistle.
