Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed Oleksandr Syrskyi, the country's commander-in-chief, on July 21, 2026. This decision follows the recent removal of Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, a popular figure whose departure triggered widespread street protests across Ukraine.

Rumors linking Fedorov's exit to a conflict with Syrskyi were soon confirmed. Fedorov, aged 35, was widely praised for revitalizing the defence ministry, transforming the armed forces, and leading efforts against misconduct. In contrast, Syrskyi, 60, was viewed by many Ukrainians as a Soviet-school commander hesitant to implement major changes within the army.

In a social media post, Zelensky thanked Syrskyi for his role in defending Kyiv during the early days of the Russian full-scale invasion in 2022 and other military campaigns. Syrskyi has been succeeded by Mykhailo Drapatyi, a well-regarded and battle-hardened general.

Zelensky indicated that all decisions regarding these changes would be formalized the following day.
