A devastating house fire broke out just after 3pm on Tuesday, July 21st, 2026, at a two-storey home on Adelaide Street in the Kingston suburb of Logan, Australia. The fire claimed the lives of Leanne Gay Laver, 62, and family friend Phillip Gordon, 73.

Leanne Laver and her husband Ari had rented the home for 35 years and raised three children, including a daughter they informally adopted as an adult. Mr. Laver, who is partially paralysed and cared for by his wife, escaped the blaze and expressed profound grief, saying he "should have died with his wife of 42 years."

Mr. Laver revealed that his wife had been battling stage four lymphoma but was reportedly on the "right route" following positive health reports. He recounted, "She was right at the front door, I ran down for the hose thinking that she would be following," but she did not escape.

Phillip Gordon, a family friend known to Mr. Laver since he was 17, also died in the fire. Mr. Laver and four others managed to get out of the house unharmed.

A neighbor described the moment the fire was noticed: "The kids just came in and started yelling the next door neighbour's house was on fire, and I smelt it before I heard it and then by the time I looked outside I saw the flames just engulfing the house next door."

The cause of the fire has not been disclosed.
