Zohran Mamdani, the mayor of New York City, acknowledged on Tuesday, July 22nd, 2026, that he does not have the legal authority to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu despite reviewing the possibility in light of an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant. Mamdani called on US federal authorities to take action if Netanyahu visits the United States later this year. In a video posted on social media, Mamdani described Netanyahu as "a war criminal, the architect of a horrific genocide against the Palestinian people."
The mayor's statement follows his earlier remarks about examining the ability to execute the ICC-issued warrant. However, he clarified that such enforcement powers do not reside with the New York City government.
