As the United States approaches midterm elections less than four months away, the ongoing war in Iran remains deeply unpopular and expensive, yet President Donald Trump shows little concern over its political impact.

According to a Washington Post-Ipsos poll, only 28% of Americans believe the war in Iran is worth fighting, while 68% oppose it. Financially, the war has contributed to surging prices, with just 17% of Americans reporting they are better off than when Trump took office. Among self-identified Maga Trump voters, 37% support continuing the war only if it does not increase costs, based on a recent Politico poll.

During a contentious Senate hearing on Tuesday, July 22, 2026, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reported that the war has cost $37.5 billion so far and requested Congress approve an $88 billion supplemental funding package.

Despite these figures and the growing unease within Republican ranks, Trump dismissed concerns about the war's influence on the elections, stating, "The election – I can’t think about that having to do with this."
