House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan issued a criminal referral on Wednesday, July 23, 2026, against former Special Counsel Jack Smith for allegedly making "willfully and intentionally false statements" during his testimony before Congress in December 2025.

In a letter to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, Jordan wrote, "The Committee on the Judiciary writes to refer strong evidence that appears to show Jack Smith, former Special Counsel, knowingly made false statements during his December 17, 2025 deposition."

Jack Smith had previously testified before the House Judiciary Committee at the Capitol in Washington in January 2026.

The referral has drawn criticism from Democrats, with Representative Jamie Raskin calling the GOP-led action "baseless" and "vindictive."
