Laura Clery, the 39-year-old actress and comedian known for her role in "Shanked," has shared intimate details of her difficult divorce from ex-husband Stephen Hilton in her new memoir, What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Hotter.
Clery recounts discovering that Hilton had allegedly been visiting massage parlors offering "happy endings," which was particularly painful as they had been intimate earlier that same day. Despite feeling "not enough," she writes that her main emotions were hurt and empathy toward him. After confronting Hilton, she was initially met with apologies and promises to call his sponsor, which gave her hope that they could manage the challenges together and eventually move forward.
The couple announced their separation in August 2022 and filed for divorce in June 2023. Clery also alleges that Hilton once threatened to kill himself in front of their children during a family outing.
Reflecting on their prolonged mediation, Clery said she stayed involved longer than she should have because she was "scared to let go of my creative partner" and "scared to stop sharing the bills with him," but ultimately realized that "You can’t pay your water bill with good intentions."
The memoir offers a candid look at the emotional and financial struggles Clery faced during the separation, including being "broke" in their $3 million house after the water was shut off.
