Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin, who has been a former ally of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, announced his resignation on Friday, July 24, 2026, halfway through his term. The largely ceremonial presidency was set to last until April 2028, but Shahabuddin is stepping down early due to health reasons. Sarwar Alam, the president's press secretary, stated, "He needs treatment and rest," adding that Shahabuddin could no longer fulfill his duties because of illness.

Shahabuddin's resignation follows Hasina's recent announcement of her plan to return to Bangladesh in December 2026 to surrender after a court conviction. According to Alam, while no official reason was given for the resignation, three sources familiar with the matter indicated that the government pressured Shahabuddin to step aside due to his longstanding ties to Hasina.

Since Hasina's ousting in August 2024 amid mass youth protests, her Awami League party has been banned, with many leaders jailed or in hiding. Shahabuddin had remained in office during the transition that led to elections bringing Tarique Rahman to power. His departure as head of state and commander-in-chief of the armed forces leaves Hasina without allies in high office just five months before her planned return.
