Defence Minister Richard Marles has confirmed that a former senior naval officer will face a court martial starting September 14, lasting up to six weeks. The military trial will be presided over by Judge Advocate Major General Michael Cowen.

The officer, referred to under the pseudonym "Star Ranked Officer in the Royal Australian Navy, Officer Brown," faces eight charges. Australian daily digital newspaper The Nightly reported that these charges relate to "lucrative military contracts" awarded in Western Australia. However, it is unclear when the alleged misconduct occurred, though The Nightly indicated it took place before the Albanese government came to power in 2022.

One defence source confirmed to ABC that the accused held a senior position within the military hierarchy. The Department of Defence has declined to provide further details citing legal and privacy obligations.

Minister Marles emphasized the importance of allowing the legal process to unfold without public commentary. Meanwhile, Greens spokesperson on Defence David Shoebridge criticized the suppression order, stating there is "no credible reason to hide the identity of the accused senior naval officer or the details of alleged offences."
