New York City police are investigating a double stabbing near Central Park on Thursday, July 23rd, 2026, as a possible hate crime, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced.

The suspect, identified as 51-year-old Raul Morales, allegedly stabbed a 57-year-old Asian man in the back with a knife and a 50-year-old Jewish man in the torso with a screwdriver. Morales reportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” before the attacks, which took place in broad daylight about two blocks apart in Manhattan’s affluent Upper West Side neighborhood.

Both victims were transported to Mount Sinai hospital and appeared to be in stable condition. Despite initial reports that both victims were Jewish, the Asian victim was confirmed not to be, according to the Times of Israel.

Authorities are also considering whether mental health issues may have played a role. Commissioner Tisch noted on X that while Morales has no known mental health history with the NYPD, the initial investigation suggests mental health may have been a factor. There is no known connection between Morales and either victim, nor between the victims themselves.

After the stabbings, Morales reportedly walked back to his apartment. A witness observed him and informed police of the building he entered.
