On Sunday, GOP Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida defended President Donald Trump’s approach to the ongoing conflict with Iran during an appearance on NewsNation’s "The Hill Sunday" with host Chris Stirewalt.

Donalds acknowledged that "nobody wants war," noting that this sentiment spans MAGA Republicans and other Americans alike. However, he stressed that Trump "doesn’t want to be involved in conflict" but must act decisively to prevent Iran, described by Donalds as a "radical terrorist regime," from obtaining nuclear weapons and controlling the strategic Strait of Hormuz. "That would be derelict in his duty as commander in chief," Donalds said.

The conflict has persisted for nearly five months, with American forces continuing strikes against Iran. U.S. Central Command (Centcom) recently completed its 13th consecutive night of attacks targeting Iranian military command centers, drone storage facilities, communication networks, coastal surveillance sites, and maritime capabilities. These actions aim "to further diminish the threat Iran poses to civilian mariners and commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz," according to Centcom.

The human cost includes 18 American soldiers killed and nearly 100 servicemembers injured since the Pentagon resumed strikes earlier this month, with 96 percent of the injured having returned to duty.

Public opinion remains divided on the conflict’s future. A recent poll found that 67 percent of respondents believe Trump should end the conflict, while one-third support continuing the war until Iran concedes more. Among political affiliations, over 90 percent of Democrats and 73 percent of independents favor ending the war, compared to 30 percent of Republicans.
