The Pentagon has removed four American troops killed during renewed fighting between the US and Iran in recent weeks from its official Iran war death toll. Instead, these deaths have been placed in a newly created category called “Overseas Operations,” which also lists 207 wounded personnel by name.

This change was reflected last week when the Defence Casualty Analysis System (DCAS), the Pentagon’s definitive source for conflict casualties, removed the four fallen soldiers and dozens of wounded troops from its Iran war tally. It remains unclear if all of the wounded were injured in the Iran conflict.

The shift has raised questions about accurately counting the human cost to US service members amid escalating strikes on Iran under the Trump administration’s efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The administration has provided little indication of plans to wind down the conflict, which remains unpopular with many Americans.

US Central Command, responsible for Middle East operations, deferred questions to the Pentagon. The Pentagon and White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Pentagon press secretary Joel Valdez stated that the drop in casualty figures was not an attempt to conceal the war’s toll but resulted from “anomalies” and “temporary data disruptions” that were expected to be resolved imminently.
