A 79-year-old man from Henderson, Nevada, died on Thursday, July 27, 2026, after suffering a medical emergency on a popular hiking trail in Sequoia National Park, California. The victim, identified as John Francis Oliver, was found along the General Sherman Tree Trail, a one-mile path leading to the world's largest living tree, the General Sherman Tree, according to the National Park Service (NPS).

First responders provided emergency medical aid at the scene, but Oliver was pronounced dead in the park. The Tulare County Sheriff's Office declined to release further details about the circumstances of the medical emergency or Oliver's death, citing respect for the family, as reported by SFGATE.

Sequoia National Park has seen other recent fatalities, including a 17-year-old girl who died in June after slipping into a fast-moving river during her first visit, and a local missing hiker found dead last summer.
