Fifa has initiated disciplinary proceedings against Argentina concerning their conduct after their 1-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final and throughout the tournament.
Last week, the world governing body appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to review incidents that occurred after the final whistle at the New York New Jersey Stadium. Multiple Argentina players and backroom staff were involved in altercations with Spain players following the match.
On the prosecutor's recommendation, Fifa will investigate Argentina players Nahuel Molina, who faces two counts of alleged assault and one count of unsporting behaviour, Leandro Paredes, who faces three counts of alleged assault, and assistant coach Roberto Ayala, who faces one count of alleged assault under article 14 of Fifa's disciplinary code. Additionally, Argentina team-mate Thiago Almada and Spain midfielder Gavi are accused of the same breach related to unsporting behaviour.
According to Fifa's disciplinary code, players and officials found guilty of unsportsmanlike conduct face a minimum one-match suspension, while those found guilty of assault face at least a three-match ban.
