Ismael Vega, a 42-year-old resident of Los Angeles' Westlake neighborhood, was sentenced on Monday, July 29, 2026, to 37 months in federal prison for his role in violent anti-ICE protests on June 8, 2025. The Justice Department announced that Vega was also ordered to pay $253,415 in restitution.

Vega pleaded guilty in April to charges of obstructing, impeding, and interfering with law enforcement during a civil disorder. Prosecutors stated that Vega knowingly targeted California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers trapped beneath a highway overpass in downtown Los Angeles. During the riots, rioters dropped burning debris, fireworks, and other objects onto a CHP patrol vehicle below.

Court documents reveal that Vega, along with Yachua Mauricio Flores, 23, and Adam Charles Palermo, 40, helped ignite and drop burning debris toward the officers. Flores poured a liquid onto burning cardboard, intensifying the flames as Vega gestured toward the fire.

Attorney Bill Essayli commented on X following the sentencing, emphasizing, "Those who attack our brave officers protecting public safety will face federal prison time for their crimes." He added, "Let this be a warning to others who think they can act without consequences."

The incident was noted for its severity and the significant toll it took on law enforcement present during the civil disorder.
