President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday, July 29th, 2026, a $22 billion renovation plan for Dulles International Airport aimed at modernizing the facility and improving safety. The project will include new terminals, replacement of the current C and D concourses, and the removal of the airport’s infamous “people mover” shuttles.

Speaking from the Oval Office alongside Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and airline officials, Trump described the current airport as "a terrible place to be," adding, "Whether you’re Republican or Democrat, you don’t want to be subjected to this airport."

The renovation will add more than 5 million square feet of new space and feature the "largest United Polaris Lounge in the world," according to Trump, who reviewed over 30 proposals for the project.

The $22.5 billion cost will not be federally funded but instead bonded, with participating airlines, including United, contributing to the payment. Trump noted the project is "largely financed" but may require some approvals from Congress.

Trump expressed optimism about the timeline, telling reporters he believes the renovations could be completed relatively quickly. He emphasized the project as part of ongoing efforts to make Washington, D.C., safer and more beautiful, addressing safety concerns related to both airlines and crime.
