Argentinian President Javier Milei has signed an emergency decree granting the government authority to bar, deport, or revoke visas of foreigners who spread “hate” or tarnish national symbols of Argentina. The decree, signed on Thursday, comes amid a wave of what Milei’s office described as global hostility toward Argentina following its participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“In light of recent displays of hostility toward the Argentine Republic and Argentines, the national government reaffirms that the defence of the nation, its citizens and its symbols is non-negotiable,” the president’s office stated.

The measure has sparked debate, with experts questioning its legality. The decree arrives at a time when many Argentinians have voiced frustration over what they perceive as unfair criticism of their national team during the recent World Cup.
