Celebrity Cruises raised its automatic gratuity charges by $1.50 per person per day starting July 29, 2026, sparking backlash from passengers who say they were given little advance notice. According to the cruise line's policy, guests who do not prepay gratuities will now pay between $19.50 and $24.50 per person per day, depending on their stateroom category.

Under the new rates, guests in Inside, Ocean View, and Veranda staterooms pay $19.50 daily, Concierge Class and AquaClass guests pay $20.50, and those in The Retreat pay $24.50. Additionally, a 20% gratuity is automatically added to purchases such as beverages, specialty dining, room service, minibar items, and spa services.

Passengers expressed frustration over the timing of the announcement, which was made on the same day the increase took effect. Some have threatened to withhold the automatic gratuity fees and instead tip crew members directly in cash. One passenger commented, "I might have paid in advance for the savings ... but this sucks," while another said, "I've started removing them and spending the exact same amount or more in direct tips."

A spokesperson from Miami-based Royal Caribbean Group, which owns Celebrity Cruises, stated that the gratuity program is part of crew compensation and reflects industry standards. Guests often credit crew members with enhancing their vacation experience.

Some passengers suggested that gratuities should be included in the fare upfront, similar to luxury cruise lines, to avoid such disputes.
