Wildfires sweeping across Spain and France have forced more than 250,000 people to evacuate, with one blaze threatening France's Bordeaux wine region and Spain declaring a national emergency. In response, France has deployed the military, and the Tour de France has been shortened as firefighters battle the extensive fires.
Among those affected are George and Amal Clooney, who evacuated their home in Brignoles, located in France's Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, along with their 9-year-old twins. A representative for George Clooney confirmed the evacuation to People magazine and shared a letter the couple sent to Brignoles Mayor Didier Brémond.
In their letter, the Clooneys expressed uncertainty about the fate of their home: "Dear Didier, At this point we have no idea whether our beautiful home makes it through this terrible moment." They emphasized their concern for the community's safety and their commitment to helping rebuild, stating, "As we evacuate Brignoles we want to emphasise 2 things, first we hope you and the people of our city are safe and second that Amal and I are committed to making sure that whatever happens to our village, we are part of this community and we’ll be part of making it whole."
The couple also conveyed their affection for Brignoles and its residents: "We love Brignoles and our friends who live there."
Fires continue to threaten southern Europe, with three firefighters reported dead in Greece as crews contend with major heat, drought, and strong winds, according to The Associated Press.
In an October 2025 interview with Esquire, George Clooney explained that he and Amal chose to raise their family on a farm in France to provide their children with a quieter upbringing away from Hollywood. He noted, "A good portion of my life growing up was on a farm, and as a kid, I hated the whole idea of it," but added that now their children "have a much better life," engaging in family dinners and chores instead of screen time.
