Wildfires sweeping across Spain and France have forced more than 250,000 people to evacuate, including Hollywood actor George Clooney and human rights attorney Amal Clooney. The couple, along with their 9-year-old twins, left their home in Brignoles, located in France's Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, as fires threatened large areas of the Mediterranean.

A representative for George Clooney confirmed the evacuation to People and shared a letter the couple sent to Brignoles Mayor Didier Brémond. In the note, they expressed uncertainty about the fate of their home and emphasized their commitment to the community:

"At this point we have no idea whether our beautiful home makes it through this terrible moment and as we evacuate Brignoles we want to emphasise 2 things," the note read. "First we hope you and the people of our city are safe and second that Amal and I are committed to making sure that whatever happens to our village, we are part of this community and we'll be part of making it whole."

They concluded with, "We love Brignoles and our friends who live there."

The wildfire near Brignoles broke out on Wednesday, burning approximately 130 hectares (about 321 acres) of vegetation before being contained around 3 a.m. local time, though it was not fully extinguished. Four firefighters were injured while battling the blaze, and firefighting efforts continue.

Beyond France, wildfires have also severely impacted Spain, which has declared a national emergency, and parts of southern Europe. Three firefighters died in Greece amid the extreme heat, drought, and strong winds, according to The Associated Press.

In an October 2025 interview with Esquire, George Clooney shared that he and Amal chose to raise their family on a farm in France to provide their children a quieter upbringing away from Hollywood.
