The hearing is part of a broader political narrative that began in 2020, when uncertainty and frustration with government responses became intertwined with conspiracy theories. Over the past six years, these theories have moved from fringe internet communities into mainstream Republican politics, the MAGA movement, anti-vaccine groups, and extremist networks.

Central to the conspiracy accusations, led by figures such as US Senator Rand Paul, is the claim that Fauci enabled the COVID-19 pandemic through US-funded research at a Wuhan lab and then participated in a government-scientific cover-up to mislead Congress and suppress the lab-leak theory.

In January 2025, President Joe Biden issued Fauci a preemptive pardon covering potential federal offenses related to his government service since 2014.

The House GOP’s COVID-19 investigation endorsed a key claim of this conspiracy narrative, concluding that the virus most likely leaked from a Wuhan lab, that Fauci helped shape a scientific paper dismissing that theory, and that he privately testified the “six feet apart” social distancing guidance “sort of just appeared.” However, these findings come from a partisan committee and have been disputed by Fauci and Democratic members.

Among QAnon believers, who hold a broad conspiracy theory involving secret elites and Donald Trump, belief in such narratives is even higher, at 85%.

The World Health Organization’s independent scientific advisory group reported in 2025 that China had not provided much of the information needed to fully evaluate competing hypotheses about the virus’s origins.

Conspiracy theories, according to experts, do not merely explain events but also identify villains, with Fauci becoming a prominent figure in this political story.
