This month, New York Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli launched a taxpayer migration dashboard revealing a significant outflow of residents from New York, particularly among the middle class. DiNapoli expressed concern about the "net loss of married, middle-class filers," urging policymakers to improve affordability for families in the state.

An analysis of five years of nationwide IRS records from 2018 to 2023 confirms these trends. Over this period, California lost more than 1.2 million people, while nearly 1.7 million residents from New York, Massachusetts, and Illinois moved their tax dollars, spending, and income elsewhere.

The data suggests that most Americans are not leaving these high-tax, housing-constrained states due to weather conditions, nor are moves to states like Florida and Texas accidental. Instead, the migration reflects economic considerations, with working-class paychecks no longer supporting middle-class lifestyles in states like New York and California.

These findings highlight a broader pattern of interstate migration driven by tax burdens and affordability challenges, as states like Florida and Texas gain residents at the expense of traditional blue states.
