"I think we're locked into an unwinnable war that is going to continue as other wars have continued without any satisfactory conclusion," Panetta said in an interview on CNN.

He added that such conflicts ultimately consume the United States, harm the economy, and damage the country's global standing. Panetta, who served under the Obama administration and oversaw the operation that led to Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden's death in 2011, emphasized the need for caution in becoming embroiled in another open-ended conflict in the Middle East.
