Spanish authorities have reported that nine people have died while attempting to cross from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. In recent days, the number of migrants trying to reach Spanish territory has surged dramatically, with approximately 40,000 migrants swimming across the sea from Morocco to Ceuta.
Many migrants spend hours at sea—some reporting more than four hours—in hopes of obtaining asylum within the European Union. Officials are urging the declaration of a national emergency in response to the escalating situation.
The enclave of Ceuta, located on the northern coast of Morocco but under Spanish control, has become a focal point for migrants seeking entry into Europe.
