France Cricket is embroiled in a governance crisis after a February 11 letter from the French sports ministry declared that no mandate had been granted for cricket for 2026-2029, and no team could officially represent "France." Despite this, the chairman, Prebagarane Balane, reportedly kept these letters hidden from the elected board, which only learned of the loss of official status weeks later, as revealed in minutes from a June 26 board meeting.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has placed France Cricket on notice for non-compliance with membership criteria, citing breaches including a lack of appropriate legal status and national recognition, an unfit governance framework, inadequate executive and administrative structures, and failure to submit a compliant three-year National Development Plan. The ICC suspended funding to France Cricket with immediate effect on June 16.

Despite these issues and the threat of suspension from world cricket, France Cricket’s vice-president recently secured a seat on the ICC board. An ICC spokesperson told FRANCE 24 that France Cricket "has the same right to participate as any other of our members," even without state recognition.

The sports ministry confirmed it sent the critical letter to France Cricket's address on February 3. Meanwhile, questions remain about why France Cricket continued to approve official "France" teams after losing recognition and why certain board meeting minutes were not published.

France Cricket now has 12 months to address the areas of non-compliance identified by the ICC.
