Ms Siti Maryam Abdul Rahman, 33, has achieved a remarkable personal milestone by deadlifting 110kg, a feat she celebrated with a victory dance at her gym. This achievement marks a significant recovery since a devastating bus accident in 2023 left her bedridden for months and unable to move without assistance.
The accident occurred shortly after Ms Maryam returned from a solo trip to Japan, taken as a break after discovering that her ex-husband of 10 years had been unfaithful. During the collision, she was dragged several meters by her bike before it jammed under the bus, likely preventing more severe injury.
Ms Maryam underwent 10 surgeries and faced a traumatic recovery period, during which she required help with basic tasks such as using the toilet and showering. She credits her muscle mass for absorbing much of the impact, which may have prevented even greater damage. Despite permanent damage limiting some movements, she has rebuilt her strength through consistent workouts, initially piecing together training from various trainers and self-teaching.
Her journey has not only transformed her own life but also inspired her to encourage seniors to engage in fitness activities. Ms Maryam’s resilience is supported by her family, particularly her mother, Mdm Rosemina, who retired in 2015 to help care for her grandchildren and suffered a fall in 2023.
Reflecting on her experience, Ms Maryam said, "Throughout that 10 years, I endured a lot of trauma as well. Whatever I went through prepared me for this day (when the accident happened)." She also expressed gratitude for the support she received, noting, "If not for them, I think I would go crazy. They would just come in the room, sit with me, play games and whatnot."
When asked about her progress, she encouraged others by saying, "You should come more often," with a bright grin, showing the energy and positivity that have fueled her recovery.
